Stanford White's Gilded Age mansion on Bellevue Avenue: a ballroom, a terrace and a lawn running to the sea.
Rosecliff is one of Newport's grand Bellevue Avenue mansions, designed by Stanford White and cared for by the Preservation Society of Newport County. Its ballroom is among the largest in Newport, and its terrace opens onto lawns that run toward the ocean.
Scale is the challenge and the gift. I photograph the architecture as a setting, never the subject, and keep the focus on the people moving through it.
(02) How I photograph it
Three things to plan for
The ballroom
Vast and white. Beautiful for the first dance and the full room from the balcony line.
The terrace
Golden hour portraits with the mansion behind and the lawn in front.
Arrivals
The forecourt and Bellevue Avenue make for cinematic arrivals and departures.
